Transform fresh apples into vibrant, chewy, sweet, and tangy candy rings with this easy-to-follow recipe. Perfect for a unique snack or a homemade gift.
Ingredients
- 4–5 large, firm, tart apples (e.g., Granny Smith, Braeburn)
- 2 cups granulated sugar
- 1 cup water
- 1/2 cup light corn syrup
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon (optional)
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg (optional)
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)
- 2–3 drops red or green gel food coloring (optional)
- Additional granulated sugar for coating (optional)
Instructions
- Step 1: Prepare Apples: Wash apples, core them, and slice into 1/4-inch thick rings. Line baking sheets with parchment paper and set a wire rack over them.
- Step 2: Make Syrup: In a large, heavy-bottomed pot, combine 2 cups granulated sugar, 1 cup water, and 1/2 cup light corn syrup. Stir over medium heat until sugar dissolves. Bring to a gentle simmer.
- Step 3: Simmer Apples: Add apple rings to the simmering syrup, ensuring they are submerged. Reduce heat to low and gentle simmer for 1 to 1.5 hours, or until translucent and tender. Add optional cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla, and food coloring during the last 15 minutes.
- Step 4: Dry Rings: Carefully remove apple rings from syrup and place in a single layer on wire racks. Let dry at room temperature for 12-24 hours, or until firm, chewy, and no longer sticky.
- Step 5: Coat (Optional): Once dried, dredge apple rings in a bowl of granulated sugar to coat, shaking off any excess.
- Step 6: Store: Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2-3 weeks.
