Ingredients
- 4 cups water (filtered is best)
- 2–3 beef bouillon cubes (or equivalent beef granules/base for 4 cups liquid)
- 1/4 yellow onion, diced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 stalk celery, sliced
- 1 bay leaf
- 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme (or 2–3 sprigs fresh)
- 5–6 whole black peppercorns
- 1 teaspoon olive oil or butter (for sautéing)
- Optional Enhancers:
- 1 teaspoon soy sauce
- 1 teaspoon nutritional yeast
- Salt to taste (adjust at the end)
Instructions
- Step 1: Sauté Aromatics. In a medium saucepan, heat olive oil or butter over medium heat. Add diced onion, minced garlic, and sliced celery. Sauté until softened and fragrant, about 5-7 minutes, without browning.
- Step 2: Combine Ingredients. Add water to the saucepan. Crumble in bouillon cubes (or add granules/base). Add bay leaf, thyme, black peppercorns, and any optional enhancers (soy sauce, nutritional yeast). Stir well to dissolve bouillon.
- Step 3: Simmer. Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer. Reduce heat to low, cover, and let it simmer for at least 20-30 minutes, or up to an hour for deeper flavor.
- Step 4: Strain and Serve. Carefully strain the broth through a fine-mesh sieve into a clean container, discarding the solids. Taste and adjust seasoning with salt or pepper if needed. Use immediately or store.
