Recreate the iconic holiday treat with this detailed recipe for tender vanilla cake, fluffy marshmallow cream, and a perfectly snapped chocolate shell. Perfect for festive gatherings or a nostalgic bite of holiday cheer.

Ingredients

  • For the Cake:
  • 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 ½ cups granulated sugar
  • 1 ½ tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp baking soda
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, melted
  • ¾ cup milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 large eggs, room temperature
  • For the Cream Filling:
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 3 cups confectioners’ sugar, sifted
  • ¾ cup marshmallow fluff (or 1 cup mini marshmallows, melted with 1 tbsp milk)
  • 2 tbsp heavy cream or milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • For the Chocolate Coating & Decor:
  • 12 oz green candy melts or white melting wafers + green oil-based food coloring
  • 1–2 tsp coconut oil (divided)
  • 4 oz brown chocolate melting wafers
  • Red decorator icing or gel
  • Gold star sprinkles
  • Assorted red and green sprinkles

Instructions

  • 1. Prepare Cake Batter: Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9×13 inch pan. Whisk dry ingredients. Whisk wet ingredients separately, then combine with dry until just mixed.
  • 2. Bake & Cool Cake: Pour batter into pan. Bake 20-25 minutes until a skewer comes out clean. Cool in pan for 15-20 min, then invert onto a wire rack to cool completely.
  • 3. Make Cream Filling: Beat softened butter until fluffy. Gradually add sifted confectioners’ sugar. Add warmed marshmallow fluff, cream, and vanilla. Beat on high until light and fluffy.
  • 4. Assemble Cake Layers: Use a Christmas tree cookie cutter to cut shapes from the cooled cake (12-16). Spread filling on one cake tree, top with another. Freeze assembled cakes for 15-20 minutes.
  • 5. Coat with Green Chocolate: Melt green candy melts with 1-2 tsp coconut oil until smooth. Dip each frozen cake sandwich, allowing excess to drip. Place on parchment. Add a star sprinkle while wet. Let set.
  • 6. Add Trunk & Decorate: Melt brown chocolate with a tiny bit of coconut oil. Dip the bottom of each green tree for a trunk. Let set. Pipe a red zig-zag line and add festive sprinkles. Allow all decorations to set before serving.
