The Best Marinara Sauce Replacement

  • Total Time: 1 hour
  • Yield: 4-6 servings (approx. 4 cups)

Description

Craft a rich, flavorful marinara sauce that beats any store-bought jar, perfect for pasta, pizza, and more. This easy recipe promises deep, authentic taste.

Ingredients

  • 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 medium yellow onion, finely diced
  • 34 cloves garlic, minced
  • ½ tsp red pepper flakes (optional)
  • ¼ cup dry red wine (optional, or vegetable broth)
  • 1 (28-ounce) can crushed San Marzano tomatoes (or whole peeled, crushed by hand)
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • 1 tsp dried basil
  • ½1 tsp sugar (optional, to balance acidity)
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
  • Fresh basil or parsley, chopped, for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  • Sauté Aromatics: In a large pot or Dutch oven, heat olive oil over medium-low. Add onion and a pinch of salt; cook until translucent and soft (8-10 mins). Add garlic and red pepper flakes; cook 1-2 minutes until fragrant.
  • Deglaze & Add Tomatoes: Pour in red wine (if using), scraping up browned bits. Simmer 1-2 minutes. Add crushed tomatoes, dried oregano, and dried basil. Stir well.
  • Simmer: Bring to a gentle simmer, then reduce heat to low. Partially cover and cook for 30-45 minutes (or up to 1.5 hours) for flavors to meld, stirring occasionally.
  • Season & Finish: Remove from heat. Season generously with salt and pepper. Add sugar if needed to balance acidity. For a smoother sauce, use an immersion blender to desired consistency. Stir in fresh herbs if using, just before serving.
