Ingredients
- 2 cups uncooked sushi rice
- 2 ½ cups cold water (for cooking rice)
- ½ cup seasoned rice vinegar
- 8–10 sheets toasted nori (seaweed)
- ½ lb sushi-grade tuna or salmon, thinly sliced into strips
- 1 large avocado, sliced
- 1 cucumber, julienned
- Optional fillings: mango strips, cooked shrimp, crab meat (real or imitation), scallions
- Optional flavor boosters: toasted sesame seeds, sriracha mayo, soy sauce, pickled ginger, wasabi
Instructions
- 1. Prepare the Sushi Rice: Rinse sushi rice thoroughly under cold water until water runs clear. Cook according to package directions (e.g., typically combine rice and water in a pot, bring to boil, reduce heat, simmer covered for 15-20 mins, then let stand off heat for 10 mins).
- 2. Season the Rice: Transfer hot cooked rice to a large, non-metallic bowl. Gently fold in the seasoned rice vinegar with a wooden paddle, using a cutting motion to avoid mashing. Fan the rice to cool it to body temperature and achieve a glossy finish.
- 3. Prepare Fillings: While rice cools, thinly slice all your chosen fillings (fish, avocado, cucumber, etc.) into strips suitable for rolling. Arrange all components artistically on a platter.
- 4. Set up Workstation: Have your nori sheets, cooled seasoned rice, all fillings, and a small bowl of water for moistening hands ready on a clean surface.
- 5. Assemble Hand Rolls: Hold a nori sheet in your non-dominant hand, rough side up. Lightly moisten your dominant hand. Take 2-3 tablespoons of rice and spread it over the left two-thirds of the nori, leaving margins. Arrange fillings diagonally across the rice. Fold the bottom-left corner of the nori diagonally over the fillings, tucking it in to form a cone. Continue rolling to seal.
- 6. Serve Immediately: Garnish with sesame seeds or sriracha mayo if desired, and serve at once with soy sauce, wasabi, and pickled ginger. Enjoy the crispness of the nori!
