Indulge in this deeply comforting and incredibly satisfying Whole30 compliant Shepherd’s Pie, featuring a rich, savory meat filling topped with a creamy, flavorful mash. It’s the perfect healthy comfort food for any night of the week.

Ingredients

  • For the Mashed Topping:1 large head cauliflower (or 2 small), or 2 medium sweet potatoes
  • 1–2 tablespoons ghee or avocado oil
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • For the Meat Filling:1 tablespoon avocado oil or ghee
  • 1.5 lbs ground beef (85-90% lean), lamb, or dark meat turkey
  • 1 large yellow onion, finely chopped
  • 2 carrots, finely diced
  • 2 celery stalks, finely diced
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 2 cups Whole30 compliant beef broth
  • 1/2 cup frozen green peas (optional, check Whole30 compliance)
  • Salt and black pepper to taste

Instructions

  • 1. Prepare the Topping: Steam or boil cauliflower/sweet potatoes until very tender. Drain thoroughly. Mash with ghee/avocado oil, salt, and pepper until smooth and creamy. Set aside.
  • 2. Cook the Meat Filling: In a large oven-safe skillet, heat oil/ghee over medium-high heat. Brown ground meat, breaking it up; drain fat. Add onion, carrots, and celery; sauté 5-7 minutes. Stir in tomato paste and cook 1 minute. Pour in broth, simmer 10-15 minutes. Stir in peas (if using) and season.
  • 3. Assemble the Pie: Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Spread meat filling evenly in the skillet or transfer to a 9×13 inch baking dish. Carefully spoon or spread the mashed topping over the filling, covering completely.
  • 4. Bake to Perfection: Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until filling is bubbly and topping is lightly golden brown. Broil for 2-3 minutes if desired for extra browning. Let rest 5-10 minutes before serving.
